A groundbreaking ceremony was held on Tuesday, Feb. 27, 2024, for the $19.1 million Calcasieu Heights retirement community in Lake Charles, Louisiana. The event, attended by representatives from MGM Development Group, Lake Charles Mayor Nic Hunter, and other officials, marked the beginning of the construction of the 72-unit, gated, hurricane and flood-resistant retirement community.

MGM Development Partner Jeff Glover expressed his appreciation for the collaboration with Mayor Hunter and the city officials, stating, “Mayor Hunter and his team have been great to work with and together we are partnering to improve the quality of healthcare and recreation in Lake Charles. Calcasieu Heights will be a state-of-the-art retirement community in a beautiful location.”

Mayor Nic Hunter highlighted the economic impact of the project, stating, “Calcasieu Heights is a tremendous win for the City of Lake Charles...Seeing economic activity in every corner of our City has been a commitment of my administration, and this announcement is yet another tangible result of that commitment.”

District A City Councilman Ronnie Harvey also commended the development, stating, “We are thrilled to see dirt turning at this site, a tangible sign of a development becoming a reality and are thankful to MGM Development for their investment in the community.”

The $19.1 million investment in Calcasieu Heights is expected to generate nearly a $50 million overall economic benefit to the Lake Charles economy, providing a boost to the city's growth and development.

MGM Development is planning to offer unique amenities at Calcasieu Heights, including free WiFi service in common areas and potential partnerships with local institutions for healthcare initiatives. Jeff Glover from MGM Development shared, “We plan to offer free WiFi service in the common areas throughout the development and we hope to partner with McNeese and local medical providers to deploy remote medical monitoring technology and other healthcare initiatives in Calcasieu Heights.”

The new retirement community, located on the scenic Calcasieu River, is poised to become a hub for residents seeking a secure and vibrant living environment in Lake Charles.
