The City of Lake Charles is launching into the New Year with a full slate of Partners in Parks events planned for the first quarter. Unless otherwise noted, all events are family-friendly, free and open to the public.
The schedule begins on Saturday, January 6, with a Christmas Tree Recycling Drop-off. From 9 a.m. – 3:45 p.m. live Christmas trees, free of decorations and lights, can be dropped off at the Nelson Road/Alma Lane Recycling Station.
On Saturday, January 13, it will be time to walk your way into the New Year with the CHRISTUS Ochsner Health SWLA Community Health Fair. Drop by Drew Park from 10 a.m. – noon for health screenings, vital health information and more.
Continuing with a theme of tackling New Year’s resolutions, on Saturday, January 20, make your way to McMillan Park for Financial Literacy Fun with SWLA Credit Union. From 10 a.m. – noon, learn about the basics of finance in a way that promises to be fun and interactive for the entire family.
The month of January will close out with the fun of imagination! On Saturday, January 27, from 10 a.m. – noon, join the City and Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries at the Gator Pond, located on North Lakeshore Drive near the Port Wonder site, for a Gator Meet-n-Greet. While you’re there, help us imagine the future of the Gator Pond.
February will strut its way in with back-to-back weekends of Mardi Gras fun! A Mask Making Workshop will be held at Historic City Hall and the Children’s Mardi Gras Stroll will return for its third year. We will test out our kite-flying skills with our Let’s Go Fly a Kite event and the month will close out with Sasol’s Nature in Focus series exploring Pollinators with a Purpose!
Finally, March will close out the first quarter with the 2024 debut of the Calcasieu Parish Public Library’s Book it to the Park, followed by a special Team Green Family Fun Day. SWLA Yoga Fest will host its 2024 event and the Region 5 STEM Center will present a Lesson in Urban Ecology. Residents can also hop on out of March and into April with the Citywide Easter Egg Hunt, hosted in partnership with Children’s Miracle Network, to close out the first quarter.
“We are thrilled to welcome a new year with a jam-packed slate of events for the first quarter,” said Mayor Nic Hunter. “2023 represented one of our most robust park programming years in history and it has been so rewarding to see our community show up every weekend, in record numbers, to experience quality programming that is fun and educational for the entire family. Our parks are a critical component of quality of life in the City of Lake Charles and we will continue to develop programming through our Partners in Parks initiative that expands opportunities for citizens of all ages to enjoy these public spaces.”
In July of 2018, Mayor Hunter’s administration launched the citywide Partners in Parks initiative aimed at combining private and public dollars to improve park infrastructure and expand programming. To date, Partners in Parks has raised over a $1.5M for City parks without any additional taxation on local citizens.
