Congressman Clay Higgins (R-LA) has issued a statement expressing his concerns and disappointment regarding the recent vote by the Louisiana Legislature’s Joint Transportation Committee against the proposed Public-Private Partnership (P3) to replace the I-10 Calcasieu River Bridge. In his statement, Higgins questions the cost of the project and emphasizes the need for transparency.

Higgins begins by raising questions about the estimated cost of the P3, stating, "The $2.1 billion cost for the P3 needs to be explained. That’s two thousand and one hundred million." He highlights the significant increase in cost compared to the original projected cost of $600-$700 million, which was shared when the bridge project was first initiated seven years ago. Higgins expresses his skepticism towards the accuracy of the state's cost estimate, stating, "Every time we got a new estimate, Governor John Bel Edwards' team raised the cost." He further emphasizes that while inflation may have impacted prices, it should not have tripled the cost.

The congressman stresses the importance of thoroughly examining the actual cost of a new bridge at I-10 in Lake Charles, stating, "We have to look very hard at exactly how much a beautiful new bridge at I-10 in Lake Charles should actually cost." He asserts that once the true cost is determined, appropriate action will be taken to ensure the project's completion.

Higgins also mentions his past communication with the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development (LADOTD) and Governor Edwards' team regarding the bridge project, stating, "I communicated the same to LADOTD years ago, as the bridge footprint and funding model were being debated." However, despite his concerns, the decision was made to pursue a P3.

Looking ahead, Higgins expresses his willingness to work with Governor-Elect Jeff Landry, his LADOTD team, and the Southwest Louisiana legislative delegation to ensure that this critical infrastructure project moves forward. He assures his support in securing additional federal investment for the I-10 Calcasieu River Bridge and pledges to assist the state in any application for federal resources.

In conclusion, Congressman Higgins's statement reflects his concerns about the cost and transparency of the proposed Public-Private Partnership for the I-10 Calcasieu River Bridge replacement. He emphasizes the need for a thorough examination of the project's cost and expresses his commitment to working with state and local officials to secure federal investment for this vital infrastructure project.
