Lake Charles mayor named vice chair in national crime prevention committee

Nic Hunter, the Mayor of Lake Charles, Louisiana, has been appointed as Vice Chair of the National League of Cities (NLC) 2025 Public Safety and Crime Prevention Federal Advocacy Committee. This appointment is for a one-year term and involves providing strategic direction for NLC's federal advocacy agenda. The areas of focus include crime prevention, corrections, substance abuse, gun violence, municipal fire policy, juvenile justice, disaster preparedness, response and recovery, and homeland security. Sharon Weston Broome, the Mayor-President of Baton Rouge and NLC President, announced this appointment.

“It is an honor to be selected for service as the Vice Chair of the NLC 2025 Public Safety and Crime Prevention Federal Advocacy Committee,” stated Mayor Nic Hunter. He emphasized the shared goal among cities to enhance public safety and expressed his eagerness to collaborate with other cities and advocate at the federal level. He noted that federal advocacy has significantly benefited Lake Charles in recent years.

As Vice Chair, Mayor Hunter will help shape NLC’s policy positions and advocate on behalf of cities across America before Congress and other administrative bodies.

“NLC’s federal advocacy committees are vital for uplifting the voices and needs of America’s 19,000 cities, towns and villages to decision-makers in Washington,” said Sharon Weston Broome. She expressed enthusiasm about working with Mayor Hunter to support his leadership in this role.

The committee's leadership includes Chair Van Johnson from Savannah, Georgia; Vice Chairs Dontario Hardy from Kinston, North Carolina; Nic Hunter from Lake Charles; and LaShay Harris from Rochester, New York.
