On November 1, a ribbon-cutting ceremony took place for the refurbished Cypress Alligator Pond located on North Lakeshore Drive. Mayor Nic Hunter was present alongside representatives from Indorama, the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries (LDWF), the Children’s Museum, Visit Lake Charles, and Crying Eagle.
Mayor Nic Hunter expressed his enthusiasm about the project, stating, “We are thrilled to welcome our three alligators home to their newly refurbished habitat here on the lakefront.” He acknowledged the collaboration with LDWF, McNeese State University staff, and Indorama in enhancing the habitat to provide both a natural environment for the alligators and an observation area for visitors.
During the refurbishment process, while the alligators were temporarily housed at Rockefeller Wildlife Refuge, contractors improved several features. These included upgrading wooden fencing, signage, gates, and fences surrounding the enclosure. The island within the pond also received substantial improvements. Cypress trunk features were rehabilitated and additional trees were planted to offer shade for both alligators and visitors.
A new deck area was constructed for public viewing along with other cosmetic enhancements. A circulating water pump was installed to maintain a healthier environment for the alligators.
The Cypress Alligator Pond is accessible daily from sunrise to sunset.
