City of Lake Charles and Region 5 STEM Center Launching Water-Based STEM Fun

The City of Lake Charles and the Region 5 STEM Center have announced an exciting upcoming event for aspiring canoe builders in the area. On Saturday, May 11, 2024, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., the Canoe Building Competition will take place at I-10 North Beach in Lake Charles.

According to the joint announcement by the City of Lake Charles and the Region 5 STEM Center, the competition is aimed at middle, high school, and post-high school students who are interested in participating in a unique STEM-based activity. Teams are invited to register for the event, where they will have the opportunity to construct their own cardboard canoe and test its functionality on the water.

Teams participating in the competition will be provided with cardboard, tape, and safety gear. The event is open to the public, free of charge, and promises to be an engaging spectacle for spectators. Additionally, prizes will be awarded for various categories, including functionality and design.

In a statement, the organizers emphasized the collaborative nature of the event, saying, "The City of Lake Charles and the Region 5 STEM Center are teaming up to launch STEM-based fun with the return of the Canoe Building Competition!" They also highlighted the exciting prospect of prizes, stating, "Prizes will be awarded for functionality, design and more!"
