The City of Lake Charles has revealed plans for the first-ever Nellie Fest, a festival dedicated to honoring the legacy of Jazz legend Nellie Lutcher. Set to take place at the Nellie Lutcher Memorial Park on April 7, the event aims to celebrate the life and achievements of the renowned artist.

Mayor Nic Hunter expressed excitement about the upcoming festival, stating, “We are making history, first by building the Nellie Lutcher Memorial Park, and second by having the first official, exclusive festival honoring the namesake of the park and district.” Hunter highlighted Lutcher's remarkable career as a Capitol Records artist and emphasized her significance as a Lake Charles legend.

Councilwoman Luvertha August also shared her enthusiasm for the event, remarking, “I hope that guests will come from near and far to be a part of this historical moment.” August recalled the vibrant history of Enterprise Boulevard and expressed pride in activating the Nellie Lutcher Memorial Park with a festival that pays tribute to Lutcher's legacy.

Senator Jeremy Stine underscored the importance of Nellie Fest as a celebration of resilience, creativity, and community spirit, stating, “Join us as we honor her memory and ignite the spirit of unity at the inaugural Nellie Fest, where music, culture, and community converge.”

The festival, scheduled to feature performances by artists such as Jairus Daigle, Street Side Jazz Band, and Leah Nicole, a Nellie Lutcher stylist, promises an afternoon of live music, food trucks, vendors, and the unveiling of a mural at the park. Attendees are encouraged to bring their lawn chairs or blankets to enjoy the cultural experience.

Nellie Fest is made possible through the support of various sponsors, including Mayor Nic Hunter, Retired State Senator Ronnie Johns, and local businesses like Mack’s Barbershop and Cox Law Firm. The event aims to bring together the community in celebration of Nellie Lutcher's legacy and the vibrant cultural heritage of Lake Charles.
