WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Department of Justice's Office of Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS Office) has awarded grant funding to support law enforcement efforts in South Louisiana. Congressman Clay Higgins (R-LA) announced today that the Town of Lake Arthur will receive $62,975 for the hiring of additional law enforcement officers, while the Calcasieu Parish School Board will receive $500,000 for school security improvements.
The COPS Office was established in 1994 to promote effective policing practices and enhance public safety. Through competitive discretionary grants, the office provides financial support to law enforcement agencies across the United States. These grants aim to empower and assist law enforcement agencies in protecting the communities they serve.
The grant funding will be utilized in the following ways:
- The Town of Lake Arthur will use the $62,975 grant to hire entry-level career law enforcement officers. This will not only create and preserve jobs but also bolster crime prevention efforts in the area.
- The Calcasieu Parish School Board will receive $500,000, which will be dedicated to improving security measures in schools and on school grounds. This investment will ensure the safety and well-being of students and staff members.
Congressman Higgins expressed his appreciation for the funding, emphasizing the importance of supporting law enforcement officers. He stated, "This funding is welcome news. I have spent most of my career dedicated to uniformed service. My Brothers and Sisters of the Thin Blue Line risk their lives every day. They deserve respect and proper funding to protect the communities that they serve."
Higgins also acknowledged the rising crime rates and the decline in officer recruitment numbers nationwide. He stressed the significance of providing assistance to law enforcement agencies during these challenging times, saying, "Our nation has seen a steep rise in crime over the past few years and recruitment numbers are down nationwide for officers. Now more than ever they need our help."
With this grant funding, the Town of Lake Arthur and the Calcasieu Parish School Board will be better equipped to address the safety needs of their respective communities. These investments in law enforcement and school security demonstrate a commitment to ensuring the well-being of residents and students in South Louisiana.
