Congressman Clay Higgins (R-LA) has announced that the Department of Justice's Office of Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS Office) will be providing grant funding to support law enforcement efforts in South Louisiana. The grants, totaling $562,975, will be allocated to the Town of Lake Arthur and the Calcasieu Parish School Board.
The Town of Lake Arthur will receive $62,975 to hire additional law enforcement officers. This funding aims to create and preserve jobs while increasing crime prevention efforts in the community. Congressman Higgins expressed his gratitude for the funding, stating, "I have spent most of my career dedicated to uniformed service. My Brothers and Sisters of the Thin Blue Line risk their lives every day. They deserve respect and proper funding to protect the communities that they serve."
The Calcasieu Parish School Board will be granted $500,000 to improve security measures in schools and on school grounds. This investment will contribute to ensuring the safety of students and staff within the school district.
The COPS Office was established in 1994 to promote effective policing practices and enhance public safety across the country. Through competitive discretionary grants, the office supports law enforcement agencies in their mission to protect and serve their communities.
It is important to note that these grants come at a critical time when crime rates have been on the rise and police recruitment numbers are declining nationwide. Congressman Higgins emphasized the need for support, stating, "Now more than ever they need our help."
The grant funding provided by the COPS Office demonstrates a commitment to strengthening law enforcement efforts in South Louisiana. By investing in the hiring of additional officers and improving school security, these grants aim to enhance public safety and protect the communities they serve.
