On Saturday, October 21, Mayor Nic Hunter was joined by District C Councilman Rodney Geyen and other City officials to announce plans for Anita Drive Park.
The brand-new park, slated for construction at the intersection of Anita Drive and Ryder Avenue, will feature a splash pad, open green space and walking trail, among other amenities such as a gazebo and bike racks.
“Anita Drive Park will be a great asset for the community as a whole, but particularly for this mid-City area,” said Mayor Nic Hunter. “We are looking forward to turning this vacant parcel of land into an active space for residents of all ages to enjoy.”
“It has long been a goal of mine to add a park in this area of the City,” said District C Councilman Rodney Geyen. “I am thrilled to see this project coming to fruition and am looking forward to seeing the residents; both young and young at heart enjoy this new amenity.”
Anita Drive Park is funded in part by a Love Louisiana Outdoors Grant through the Louisiana Office of Community Development. The project is currently out for bid, with construction expected to get underway before the end of 2023. Weather permitting; the park will be complete and ready for use by the summer of 2024.
In addition to Anita Drive Park, Mayor Hunter also elaborated on additional community services to be located in the Anita Drive area.
Plans include adding a Youth Center to house a Boys and Girls Clubs location at this site, which would double as a Community Resilience Hub. In the event of future natural disasters, this Community Resilience Hub could be activated as a space for residents to gather and receive needed assistance before or after a storm.
These additional investments are contingent on the passing of LC REBOUND, a tax neutral proposition, on the November 18 ballot.
