McNeese State University’s College of Science, Engineering and Mathematics will celebrate National Engineers Week Feb. 27-March 1 with several special activities and events.

Since 1951, National Engineers Week has helped bring engineering to life for students, educators and parents by raising awareness about the contributions of engineers. This year’s theme is “Creating the Future,” which highlights how engineers play a vital role in innovating solutions and by working together to develop new technologies, products and opportunities to global challenges that impact future generations.

On Monday, Feb. 27, McNeese will hold an open house for students of all ages, their parents and members of the community from 5:30-7:45 p.m. in Drew Hall. Attendees will be able to tour McNeese’s facilities and talk with engineering and computer science students and faculty to learn more about the engineering and computer science profession and the various degree programs offered at McNeese.

Visitors to the open house will have the opportunity to tour the new Industrial Process Control Center lab. This lab allows engineering students at McNeese to learn real-world lessons in a controlled environment. Using state-of-the-art equipment students learn about automation, process control and robotics.

McNeese is also celebrating a group of civil engineering students who are traveling to Columbus, Ohio in late February to compete in the National Precast Concrete Association (NPCA) Foundation Student Competition.

On Tuesday, Feb. 28, over 250 students from 9 area schools will have the opportunity to personally discover and explore different aspects of engineering and computer science at E-Week Expo Day from 8 a.m.-12.30 p.m. in Drew Hall. Those schools include: Barbe, Bishop Noland Episcopal Day School, DeRidder, F.K. White, Grand Lake, Iowa, LaGrange, Lake Arthur and Vinton.

Students will tour McNeese’s campus facilities and see project demonstrations in the areas of civil, chemical, electrical, mechanical and computer engineering as well as computer science, all organized and presented by McNeese engineering students and faculty.

Students will also have the chance to participate in various competitions of skill and aptitude and win prizes.

The week’s activities conclude Wednesday, March 1, with an E-Week Conference Day for McNeese students, faculty and staff to listen to presentations from industry experts and an engineering banquet held that night to recognize outstanding McNeese engineering and computer science students.
