Congressman Clay Higgins has expressed approval following the House's approval of H.R. 6843, a bill that incorporates Lafourche Parish into the Atchafalaya National Heritage Area. The legislation was introduced by House Majority Leader Steve Scalise and received support from Congressman Higgins.

The Atchafalaya National Heritage Area currently includes 14 parishes and plays a role in preserving cultural heritage, promoting tourism, and enhancing ecological habitats and wildlife in the region. Parishes presently included are St. Mary, Iberia, St. Martin, St. Landry, Avoyelles, Pointe Coupee, Iberville, Assumption, Terrebonne, Lafayette, West Baton Rouge, Concordia, East Baton Rouge, and Ascension.

Congressman Higgins remarked on the bill's passage: “I’m glad to see legislation expanding the Atchafalaya National Heritage Area pass the House,” adding that "Lafourche Parish shares the same natural resources and cultural significance as others in the Heritage Area," while expressing gratitude to Majority Leader Scalise for his leadership on this matter.
