Congressman Clay Higgins (R-LA) announced today that he has signed the discharge petition to force a House floor vote on H.R. 82, the Social Security Fairness Act. The discharge petition requires 218 signatures from members of Congress.

Congressman Higgins has advocated for this legislation since 2017. Earlier this year, Congressman Higgins sent a letter to both Chairman Jason Smith (R-MO) of the House Ways and Means Committee and Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) urging committee passage and a vote on the House Floor.

“H.R. 82 has been deliberated on long enough,” said Congressman Higgins. “Louisiana’s public servants and many Americans across the country have been unfairly penalized by the provisions of the GPO and WEP. This injustice must be corrected. My office remains committed to ensuring the passage of H.R. 82, and this discharge petition is a step in the right direction.”
