Hayden Stringfellow delivered a walk-off single in the bottom of the 11th inning on March 21, scoring Larry Edwards Jr. and giving McNeese an 8-7 victory over Southeastern Louisiana University in Southland Conference baseball action.
The win marks the third consecutive victory for McNeese, improving their record to 12-10 overall and 6-5 in conference play. Southeastern dropped to 12-11 overall and 4-4 in league games. The Cowboys will attempt to sweep the series on Sunday at 1 p.m.
Stringfellow entered as a pinch-hitter in the ninth inning with the score tied at seven after Southeastern rallied with two outs in the top of the frame. He connected on a 1-2 pitch for a single into center field, securing his second walk-off hit of the season. Earlier this year, he also hit a walk-off single against Sam Houston in another extra-inning contest.
In Saturday’s game, Edwards Jr. led off the decisive inning with a single and advanced to second on a groundout. After DJ Pinkerton was intentionally walked, both runners executed a double steal to move into scoring position, setting up Stringfellow’s game-winning hit.
Parker Morgan earned his first win of the season by pitching a perfect top of the 11th inning with two strikeouts. Elliott Burrows helped McNeese escape a bases-loaded situation in the ninth by striking out a batter and then held Southeastern scoreless through the tenth.
McNeese tallied 13 hits during the game, highlighted by Matt Stancliff’s four-hit performance and Danny Barbero’s three hits including a home run. Southeastern started strong with two home runs in the first inning but could not hold off McNeese’s comeback efforts throughout extra innings.
