The City of Lake Charles Utilities Division has issued an update regarding the ongoing lane closure on Nelson Road, a section of State Route 1138-2. This closure was initiated due to damage discovered during efforts to repair a collapsed sidewalk near the intersection with McNeese Street.

City crews found that a fiber optic boring company had accidentally damaged a 24-inch sewer line beneath the southbound lane. The complexity of this repair necessitated the involvement of a local engineering firm to evaluate and design the necessary work scope. After following legal procurement procedures, a contractor was selected through the Lake Charles City Council's approval process.

As repairs commenced, additional issues were identified that require attention before proceeding with final repairs. Consequently, another contractor has been engaged and is anticipated to start within the week.

Upon completion of these tasks and contingent upon favorable weather conditions, officials expect the road to reopen fully in three to four weeks. The traffic management plan currently in place adheres to Department of Transportation and Development (DOTD) standards.

The City's Risk Management Division is actively involved in determining responsibility for the damage to wastewater infrastructure.
