Congressman Clay Higgins has announced that Iraq will be purchasing an additional 88,000 metric tons of U.S. long-grain milled rice as part of the 2024-2025 Memorandum of Understanding (MOU). This new acquisition raises the total amount to 220,000 metric tons, exceeding the initial agreement of 200,000 metric tons.

"Since coming to Congress, I’ve worked to expand global markets and trade opportunities for Louisiana farmers," stated Congressman Higgins. He emphasized that "South Louisiana is a major producer, miller, and exporter of rice," and noted the positive impact Iraq's purchase has had on his district. Higgins described this latest purchase as beneficial for the American rice industry and reaffirmed his commitment to advocating for Louisiana’s rice sector.

Earlier in February, Congressman Higgins met with Iraqi Ambassador H.E. Nizar Al-Khairallah to discuss enhancing collaboration between the United States and Iraq. During their meeting, he personally delivered a letter urging Iraq to complete its purchase of the remaining 70,000 metric tons under the current MOU.
