Congressman Clay Higgins announced that President Trump and U.S. Secretary of Energy Chris Wright have approved the first Liquified Natural Gas (LNG) export authorization under the current administration to Commonwealth LNG. The project, located in Cameron Parish, had faced delays due to a moratorium on LNG export permit approvals during the Biden administration.
Once operational, Commonwealth LNG will have the capacity to export up to 1.21 billion cubic feet per day of natural gas as LNG. Congressman Higgins expressed his support for the decision, stating, "Today’s approval is a win for American energy and South Louisiana." He emphasized the importance of expanding America's LNG industry, which he believes provides clean, reliable, and affordable energy.
Higgins highlighted President Trump's commitment to restoring American energy dominance and noted that this decision could lead to further expansion of LNG facilities and job creation in South Louisiana. In December 2024, Higgins had urged Secretary Wright to reverse the previous administration's moratorium on LNG permits and expedite reviews of pending applications such as Venture Global’s CP2 project and Commonwealth LNG's permit.
