Congressman Clay Higgins has urged the Social Security Administration (SSA) to expedite the implementation of the Social Security Fairness Act. The legislation, signed into law on January 5, 2025, aims to address issues related to the Windfall Elimination Provision (WEP) and Government Pension Offset (GPO).
The SSA's website indicates that full implementation could take a year or longer. Congressman Higgins expressed concern over this timeline in a letter addressed to the SSA’s Acting Commissioner. He stated, “Those who have suffered under the failures of the Windfall Elimination Provision (WEP) and Government Pension Offset (GPO) do not have the time to wait a year or more until they start seeing changes to their benefits.”
Higgins acknowledged the complexity of updating benefits for over 3.2 million individuals but emphasized that "the American people deserve excellent performance." He highlighted past efforts by "The Trump Administration" in improving government efficiency and suggested that similar strategies be applied here.
In his letter, Higgins requested a detailed response from SSA regarding their current implementation plan and an explanation of how they arrived at the projected timeline. He encouraged prioritizing resources and staff to accelerate this process.
