Congressman Clay Higgins, representing Louisiana's 3rd District, has voted in favor of the HALT Fentanyl Act, also known as H.R. 27. This legislation aims to permanently classify fentanyl-related substances as Schedule I drugs. The bill is designed to provide law enforcement with enhanced tools to combat the distribution of these dangerous substances.

Higgins is an original co-sponsor of the bill and emphasizes its importance in addressing the ongoing crisis related to fentanyl use and distribution. He stated that the bill will allow practitioners to continue researching fentanyl analogues to better understand their impact on health.

In a statement regarding the severity of the issue, Congressman Higgins said, “Fentanyl poisoning is now the number one cause of death among adults aged 18-49. The cartels have flooded America with this Chinese poison. Over 200 thousand young Americans have died from illicit fentanyl, and our message to the animals selling this deadly drug is clear… we are coming for you.”

The passage of this act marks a significant step in efforts to control and mitigate the effects of fentanyl within communities across the United States.
