Congressman Clay Higgins has urged President Joe Biden to deploy military resources to aid communities devastated by Hurricane Helene. In a letter, Higgins emphasized the need for the Department of Defense to conduct airdrop operations, delivering personnel and supplies to affected areas.
Higgins expressed his concern over the scale of destruction caused by the hurricane, stating it is "unlike that of any disaster I have previously witnessed." He questioned whether traditional response models could adequately address the crisis and suggested that military involvement is necessary. "While I appreciate my colleagues from these areas who are working tirelessly to deliver relief," he wrote, "it is my belief that DOD assets should be made available to supplement FEMA and other federal response efforts."
Highlighting the dire conditions faced by Americans in remote communities, Higgins noted that they are "left dying from hunger and thirst" due to the inaccessibility of traditional response mechanisms. The congressman called for airlift operations as a means of providing critical support: "We should be running airlift operations and delivering hope in this time of despair."
The letter reflects Higgins' sense of urgency regarding federal intervention in disaster recovery efforts following Hurricane Helene's impact.
