The City of Lake Charles and Region 5 STEM Center have joined forces to offer an educational event titled Lessons in Urban Ecology. Scheduled for Saturday, March 23, 2024, at Riverside Park, the program aims to provide insights into the dynamic interactions between living organisms and their urban surroundings.
As defined by the organizers, urban ecology involves "the scientific study of the relation of living organisms with each other and their surroundings in the urban environment." This concept will be at the core of the hands-on learning experience set to take place from 10 am to noon on the specified date.
Attendees can look forward to engaging in a series of interactive experiments designed for the whole family. Activities such as experimenting with disappearing ink will help participants grasp the impact of greenhouse gases, while working with a small battery-powered fan will shed light on the effects of wind erosion. Moreover, individuals will have the chance to create their own terrariums, offering them a practical understanding of ecosystems as habitats.
The event, known as a Partners in Parks initiative, is free for all members of the public to attend. Those interested in learning more about urban ecology and participating in the informative activities are encouraged to reach out for additional details by calling 337-491-1280.
