WASHINGTON, D.C. – In a move to curb the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the IRS’ tax evaluation process, Congressman Clay Higgins and Congressman Eric Burlison introduced the No AI Audits Act. The proposed legislation aims to add safeguards to protect taxpayers from unaccountable audits.
"The weaponization of AI technology is an ominous threat to our Constitutional freedoms," expressed Congressman Higgins. He further emphasized, "Unelected bureaucrats in DC should not be using AI as a tool to further weaponize the federal government against the American people. We, as a Congress who have been sworn to serve the people, must think seriously about the implications of the rapid deployment of AI technology. We must focus on the balance between the power of AI and the dangers it holds for freedom-loving Americans and our national security."
The No AI Audits Act includes provisions that would require audit selection and initiation to be conducted by an IRS staff investigator with available contact information. Additionally, it aims to limit the IRS Commissioner’s authority to implement AI guidance without clear protections for taxpayers. The legislation also calls for a GAO review of AI use at the IRS to bring transparency to any adverse effects of the technology on taxpayer rights.
The introduction of this bill reflects concerns about the potential misuse of AI in government processes and underscores the importance of ensuring accountability and protecting the rights of taxpayers.
