WASHINGTON, D.C. - Congressman Clay Higgins (R-LA) has announced that the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) will be providing an additional $24,078,966.14 million in federal grants for hurricane recovery efforts in Southwest Louisiana. This funding is being made available through the major disaster declaration for Hurricane Laura, which Congressman Higgins supported.
The reimbursement includes several key projects aimed at restoring and rebuilding critical infrastructure in the affected areas. One of the major allocations is $6,162,038.41 to the Office of Risk Management for permanent restoration work to McNeese University – Quadrant D. This reimbursement, made at a 90% federal cost-share, is authorized under Section 406 of the Robert T. Stafford Act.
In addition, the Cameron School Board Office will receive $12,825,812.80 to replace the South Cameron High School Gymnasium, while the Office of Risk Management will receive $3,944,437.65 for repairs to the main campus of McNeese University. The City of Lake Charles will also receive $1,146,677.28 for repairs to Buddy Prejean Park. All reimbursements are made at a 90% federal cost-share and authorized under Section 406 of the Robert T. Stafford Act.
Congressman Higgins emphasized the important role that these funds play in supporting the ongoing recovery efforts in Southwest Louisiana. He stated, "Southwest Louisiana does not let storms destroy our spirit. We are Louisiana strong. To date, we have delivered over $4.2 billion in recovery relief. Our office will continue to prioritize hurricane recovery and work with our local, state, and federal partners to ensure that much-needed resources are delivered for renewed economic growth and prosperity."
It is worth noting that the coordination and allocation of these funds is the result of extensive collaboration between Congressman Higgins, FEMA, and various state and local stakeholders. Congressman Higgins highlighted the behind-the-scenes work that goes into securing these funds, stating, "Much of our official Congressional work to advance recovery projects occurs behind the scenes. Funding finalization and the associated formal announcement of funding are the result of constant efforts over many months with FEMA and state and local stakeholders."
All of the funding will be delivered to the State of Louisiana, which will then be responsible for disbursing the funds to each sub-recipient. This ensures that the funds are effectively utilized and reach the communities that need them the most.
