WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman Clay Higgins (R-LA) has expressed his concerns regarding the proposed Public-Private Partnership (P3) to replace the I-10 Calcasieu River Bridge. In response to the Louisiana Legislature's Joint Transportation Committee vote against the plan, Higgins issued a statement emphasizing the need for a reevaluation of the project's cost.
Higgins questioned the estimated cost of $2.1 billion for the P3, stating, "The $2.1 billion cost for the P3 needs to be explained. That's two thousand and one hundred million." He highlighted that when his office first began advocating for the bridge project seven years ago, the projected cost was significantly lower, ranging from $600 to $700 million. Over the years, however, the cost estimates provided by Governor John Bel Edwards' team have continuously increased. Higgins expressed skepticism, saying, "I don't trust the State's cost estimate."
Acknowledging the impact of inflation since 2017, Higgins called for a thorough examination of the actual cost of constructing a new bridge at I-10 in Lake Charles. He stated, "We have to look very hard at exactly how much a beautiful new bridge at I-10 in Lake Charles should actually cost. Then, whatever that amount is, we'll get it done." Higgins emphasized that he had previously communicated the same concerns to LADOTD when the bridge's design and funding model were being debated. However, LADOTD and Governor Edwards' team opted to pursue the P3.
Looking towards the future, Higgins expressed his willingness to work with Governor-Elect Jeff Landry, his LADOTD team, and the Southwest Louisiana legislative delegation to ensure that this critical infrastructure project moves forward. He assured his office's support in securing additional federal investment for the I-10 Calcasieu River Bridge and pledged to assist the state with any application for federal resources.
With Congressman Higgins urging a reevaluation of the cost and a commitment to securing federal investment, the fate of the I-10 Calcasieu River Bridge replacement plan remains uncertain.
