McNeese women’s tennis moved into first place in the Southland Conference at 4-0 after a 5-2 victory over Stephen F. Austin on March 23. The Cowgirls have now won nine straight matches, improving to a 14-1 overall record and maintaining an undefeated home record at 4-0.
This win is significant as it keeps McNeese at the top of the conference standings and extends their winning streak, showing strong performance as they approach more challenging games ahead.
Head coach Sonia Carlson said, “I’m very proud of our total team effort today. We outcompeted SFA from the very first point and brought great fire and intensity throughout the match. Getting both doubles points this weekend was huge for us and really set the tone early. Ana Hollweg had a stellar weekend going 4–0 and continues to lead by example, and Elena stepped up in big moments, clinching both matches for us.” Carlson also added, “These battles against high-level opponents are exactly what we need, and they’re going to give us a lot of confidence heading into next weekend. We just faced two of the toughest teams on our schedule, and this group showed that we’re ready to keep fighting and competing at a high level every time we step on the court.”
The Cowgirls secured the doubles point with wins on courts two (Salome Fluri/Erica Hagi) and three (Ana Hollweg/Naomi Hagi), giving them an early lead. In singles play, Hollweg contributed another point by defeating Antonella Taco in straight sets while Erica Hagi added a win on court five. Elena Morales clinched the match for McNeese with her three-set victory over Avery Kinsey.
Alexa Martinez earned one more singles win for McNeese by defeating Felicia Back in a close contest on court two.
Looking ahead, McNeese will play its next three matches on the road with upcoming conference contests against Nicholls State University on Saturday followed by University of New Orleans next Monday. The team will also face Dillard University after their Southland Conference match against UNO.
