McNeese State University’s softball team will begin its Southland Conference schedule this weekend by hosting Lamar University at Cowgirl Diamond in Lake Charles. The series starts with a single game on Friday at 6 p.m., followed by a doubleheader on Saturday at 1 p.m. All games will be available for streaming on ESPN+.
The Cowgirls, who have won the regular season championship four years in a row, currently hold a 16-7 record. They are coming off a 14-9 win over Houston earlier this week. Lamar, with an 11-10 record, enters the series after defeating Sam Houston 10-5.
McNeese leads the Southland Conference in several offensive categories, including batting average (.325), hits (195), home runs (26), runs batted in (128), and walks (110). Their walk total ranks fourth nationally.
Junior Nyjah Fontenot leads McNeese’s offense with a .403 batting average, 31 hits, and four home runs. Rylee Cloud follows closely with a .400 average, 26 hits, and is tied for the team lead with five home runs. Other top hitters include Jada Muñoz (.355), Corine Poncho (.323), and Maddie Taylor (.313). Muñoz also shares the team high of five home runs.
On the pitching staff, freshman Brookelyn Taylor holds a 5-2 record with a 3.52 ERA and four saves. Kynlei Chapman has compiled a 4-3 record with a 4.38 ERA, while Maddie Taylor is 6-1 with a 4.54 ERA.
