McNeese State University’s baseball team secured a 14-5 win over Southern University on Tuesday night in Baton Rouge. This marks the Cowboys’ third straight midweek victory, bringing their overall record to 6-6 and 2-1 in conference play.
The game began with McNeese taking an early lead as Marcus Heusohn singled to center field, allowing Danny Barbero to score. In the second inning, DJ Pinkerton reached base on an error by Southern’s center fielder, which brought in Easton Dowell for another run.
Pinkerton contributed again in the fourth inning with a single that scored Dowell, increasing McNeese’s advantage. Southern responded in the bottom of the fourth when Kameron Byrd hit a home run over the left field wall.
The fifth inning saw McNeese add five runs, including hits from Bryce Fontenot and Pinkerton, extending their lead to 8-1. Southern narrowed the gap in the sixth with Glen Green III’s sacrifice fly and KJ White’s double down the right field line. Donny Sandifer also scored on a wild pitch during Kennedy Drexler’s walk.
Southern managed one more run in the seventh as Byrd hit a sacrifice fly to bring Edward Gregory Jr. home. However, McNeese pulled away late, scoring three runs each in both the eighth and ninth innings.
Southern’s starting pitcher Caiden Stewart pitched four innings, giving up four hits and four runs (three earned), walked two batters, struck out three, and received his first loss of the season (now 1-1). For McNeese, Jairus Miller started on the mound for four innings, allowing one run on three hits while walking one and striking out five batters—matching his career high—to improve to 2-0 this season. Relievers Connor Achee, Myles Meyer, and Jaden Bahl handled the final five innings for McNeese.
