Congressmen Clay Higgins and Troy A. Carter, Sr., both representing Louisiana, have taken a legislative step to bolster the safety of seafood consumed in the United States. They have introduced H.R. 2715, known as the Destruction of Hazardous Imports Act. The bill aims to empower the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) with the authority to destroy seafood imports that fail to meet U.S. health and safety standards.
Under current regulations, the FDA’s authority does not extend to all imported food products, including seafood. This gap in jurisdiction has allowed foreign entities to import seafood tainted with harmful chemicals that could pose significant health risks to consumers.
“Billions of pounds of uninspected seafood continue to enter our country, causing major health concerns,” stated Congressman Higgins. He emphasized the importance of holding foreign seafood imports to the same high standards as those faced by U.S. producers, particularly highlighting the quality of Louisiana seafood.
Congressman Carter, representing Louisiana’s 2nd district, also backed the legislation, underscoring its significance in protecting consumer health and supporting the state’s seafood industry. “This legislation will protect Louisiana’s health and support our seafood economy,” he stated.
The Southern Shrimp Alliance’s executive director, John Williams, praised the bipartisan effort for attempting to close existing regulatory loopholes. “Giving these [dangerous] products back to the foreign shipper does little to incentivize them to address safety problems before shipping products to this country,” Williams commented, thanking the congressmen for their initiative.
The introduction of this legislation seeks to eliminate what has been described as a “ridiculous limitation” on the FDA’s authority, with a broader aim of enhancing the safety and integrity of the nation’s food supply.
