City officials and the Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC) Pelican Chapter announced plans to establish a new location in Lake Charles. The facility will be housed in the former Walgreens building at the intersection of Gerstner Memorial Drive and 12th Street.

The project is funded primarily through Community Development Block Grant – Disaster Recovery Funds. It aims to revitalize the long-vacant building while providing workforce development opportunities for the local community.

Mayor Nic Hunter expressed support for the initiative, stating, “Any time we can invest in a project that will help our citizens enhance or gain new skills to improve their lifestyle, it is a worthy endeavor.” He praised ABC Pelican Chapter as an organization with a successful track record in the area.

ABC Pelican Chapter is one of 68 chapters of a national trade association representing over 21,000 members. David Helveston, President and CEO of ABC Pelican Chapter, commented on the project’s significance: “This is a project we have discussed for several years now and we are excited to see it become a reality.” He highlighted that hundreds of students would receive training annually in various crafts, preparing them for careers in construction and industry throughout the region.

Construction is slated to begin this year, with completion expected by early 2026. District C City Councilman Rodney Geyen emphasized the program’s role in workforce development: “This program is all about workforce development. This will offer kids in high school and adults of all ages develop skills that will enhance their personal economic development.”
