Jaslyn Russell, a thrower for the McNeese Cowgirls, has been named the 2026 Southland Conference Women’s Field Athlete of the Year for the indoor season. The announcement was made by the league on Wednesday.
Russell contributed 18 points to her team during last week’s conference indoor championships. She became the first athlete from McNeese to win both a league championship and a gold medal in the shot put event, achieving a throw of 49-11.75. In addition to this accomplishment, she secured second place and a silver medal in the weight throw with a mark of 58-6.
Throughout the season, Russell recorded three first-place finishes, one second-place finish, and one third-place finish in shot put across five meets. In weight throw events, she finished first twice, placed second and third once each, and took fifth place in another meet.
Russell is from Oakdale and becomes only the third Cowgirl to receive this award. Previous winners include La’Shantena Rounds in 2012 and 2014 as well as Morgan Talley in 2023.
