Congressman Clay Higgins announced his support for President Trump’s newly announced tariffs on imported goods. These measures are expected to provide benefits to American seafood and agricultural producers.
The explicit aim of the tariffs is to counteract what are deemed as “unrighteous trade practices” which have reportedly disrupted fair market conditions, posing threats to American industries. Congressman Higgins noted, “We are taking strong action to put America First,” adding his encouragement to the administration’s actions targeting imported seafood and rice. He also expressed his support for efforts aimed at protecting domestic industry.
In February, Congressman Higgins addressed a letter to President Trump, urging the imposition of tariffs and reinforced trade enforcement concerning seafood imports from several countries including China, Ecuador, India, Indonesia, and Vietnam. Rice imports from countries like India, Thailand, China, Pakistan, and Vietnam were also highlighted in his request.
The new tariffs reflect a 10% baseline rate with adjustments for specific countries: a 34% tariff for China, 26% for India, 36% for Thailand, 32% for Indonesia, 10% for Ecuador, 29% for Pakistan, and 46% for Vietnam.
