Congressman Clay Higgins announced that FEMA is providing an additional $10,959,422.84 in federal grants for hurricane recovery efforts in Southwest Louisiana. This funding comes through the major disaster declaration for Hurricane Laura (DR-4559-LA), which Higgins supported.
The funds include $3,486,986.90 to the St. Nicholas Center for Children for building replacement due to Hurricane Laura, authorized under Section 406 of the Robert T. Stafford Act at a 90% federal cost-share. The City of Sulphur will receive $3,436,062.30 for permanent repairs to its Waste Water Treatment Generator System and Transfer Switch from Hurricane Laura, authorized under Section 428 of the same act.
Additionally, the South Louisiana Electric Cooperative Association is allocated $1,323,640.80 for permanent repairs to its Houma office building after Hurricane Ida and $2,712,732.84 for replacing the Houma Office building due to the same storm. Both allocations are made at a 90% federal cost-share and authorized under Sections 406 and 428 of the Robert T. Stafford Act respectively.
Higgins emphasized that much of the work on these recovery projects happens behind the scenes with constant efforts involving FEMA and state and local stakeholders. He stated that all funding would be delivered to Louisiana, which will then disburse it to each sub-recipient.
In his statement, Congressman Higgins said: “South Louisiana does not let storms destroy our spirit. To date, we have delivered over $5 billion in recovery relief. Our office will continue to work with our local, state, and federal partners to ensure the economic growth and prosperity of Louisiana through hurricane recovery resources.”
