McNeese State University’s softball team secured a decisive 8-0 victory over Lamar University on Saturday, completing a series sweep in Southland Conference play. The win brings McNeese’s overall record to 19-7 and 3-0 in conference games, while Lamar falls to 11-13 overall and remains winless in the SLC at 0-3.
The Cowgirls established an early lead by scoring three runs in the first inning and another in the second. The opening frame saw five consecutive McNeese players reach base, highlighted by doubles from Nyjah Fontenot and Rylee Cloud, along with three walks. Fontenot led off with a double, followed by Corine Poncho drawing a walk. Cloud then doubled to left center, bringing Fontenot home for the first run.
After Muñoz walked to load the bases, Maddie Taylor drew another walk that scored Poncho. A sacrifice fly from Maddie Weeks brought Muñoz home for the third run of the inning.
In the second inning, Poncho grounded out to score Dibbley from third base, extending McNeese’s lead to 4-0. Dibbley crossed home plate again in the fourth on a ground out by Cloud, making it 5-0.
The game concluded under run-rule conditions after Malayna Daigle entered as a pinch hitter and delivered a walk-off triple down the left field line in the fifth inning. This hit cleared loaded bases after Rylee Eyster singled, Kassidy Chance doubled, and Weeks reached on an error.
McNeese totaled eight runs on eight hits—six of which were extra-base hits—and recorded eight RBIs with only one strikeout. Both Cloud and Dibbley had two hits each; Dibbley’s pair of doubles increased her season total to nine.
Pitcher Brookelyn Taylor earned her seventh win of the season (7-2 overall; 2-0 SLC) with a complete game shutout. She allowed four hits, issued one walk, and struck out three batters. Taylor was also credited with the win in Saturday’s opening game.
Looking ahead, McNeese will begin an eight-game road stretch starting Wednesday with a non-conference matchup against Louisiana Tech.
